Hey did you create your new blog? Or just want to do it? No matter. In any case you have to adjust it to archive your purposes. You want to make money from it, or you just want to promote affiliate products, or may be want it to read by big auditory, anyway there are things which you should test to increase your blog’s popularity.

Every time when I create new blog, after my first readers had come, I begin to change some things. I am making my blogs on Blogger, because of easy inserting of ads and banners there. I has found out, that even minimal changes could get my blog high in search engine positions and increase the profit.

Well here it is, a few things you could test.

1. Blog template. This could essentially increase conversions or rankings in the search engines. Try to choose the template with minimal HTML (the easier the better) but change its colors, sizes and fonts. Your blog must be unique.

2. Google Adsense.? You could try putting different types of Adsense on your blogs and you could try changing the position of your Adsense ads. From the placing of Adsense block depends the quantity of clicks on it. I always try to place it inside the text, and also checking the colors of its text.

3. Different ways to get back links. You could try getting back links in different ways as there are always new ways to get back links. Link baiting, forums, press releases, blog comments and article directories will increase your chance in getting high search engine positions. Don’t neglect of any of this ways.

4. Banner Ads.? Try testing the difference between text and graphic banners at the top of your blog. You could try different colors or words.

5. Blog Copy.? Try testing the sales copy on your blogs. See if you can pre sell the affiliate product better. This could give your income a serious increase if it works better. Some experiments with the picture of the product, allowed me to increase my income in times.

These are just a few factors that can improve your income. There are many more so just test anything you can. You don’t imagine what trifles can approach you to your blogging success.

Just because you have a blog doesn’t mean anyone knows about it or reads it. Like any other website, you still need do some promotion to drive traffic. Otherwise you’re just a needle in the haystack. Here’s a few things you can do start bringing people to your blog.

1) Submit your blog to both traditonal and blog search engines, and ping them everytime you write a new post. For this I use Ping-o-Matic.

2) Post useful comments on other related blogs. This really does generate good traffic. I often click the links of others that have left comments on the blogs I read regularly. I also visit the sites of every single person who leaves a comment on this site, and have come across so many great blogs this way.

3) If you have a lot to say about another blog post try writing about it on your site instead of leaving a comment. But make sure you leave a trackback link. I also read all the trackbacks on my site and can guarantee every other blogger does too. Of course we want to know what others have to say about our posts. Do this everytime you quote or refer to a blog.

4) Make sure you have a RSS feed that people can subscribe to. This will help others keep track of your blog. Very important for repeat visitors. Don’t forget to subscribe to my feed.

5) Post often when you first start your blog. As time goes on you don’t have to post everyday but try not to ever go longer than a week without posting. Your blog will start looking like a ghost town and your visitors won’t want to come back if you don’t update it on a regular basis.

6) Write high-quality posts. They don’t have to be long but they need to be good. Give a unique view of your opinions. Try writing something that will create a buzz and get other bloggers to talk and link about your posts. Ever you ever write something good enough to get on Digg that alone will bring in 30,000 visitors and a few thousand links to your site.

Don’t give up. It’s hard to build an audience and takes a lot of time and effort. It won’t happen over night, unless you’re already somewhat of a celebrity. Stick with it, if you write unique content eventually you will build a good following.

Thanks to broadband, now everyone has access to internet. The latest cable internet reviews have graded adsl higher than dsl. Naturally wireless is much better. There are also options available to speed up dsl service.

In Part 1 of this two-part series, I addressed the features within WordPress that makes it attractive for Search Engine Marketers to use as a content management system. Part 2 will talk about plug-ins and general guidelines to help you set yourself up for success when designing a blog or Web site blog.

Plug-ins are, in effect, code “hacks” that add features to your WordPress blog. There are tons of plug-ins out there that can help you add features to your blog. Fortunately, it’s fairly easy to find one that will work for you. Use the WordPress Codex Web site to find all manners of plug-ins to enhance your WordPress experience.

A small word of warning about using plug-ins: Generally, when WordPress releases an update, it takes a while for the plug-ins to be re-written and updated for compatibility. When we moved our blogs to the newest version of WordPress recently, we had to reconfigure a few of the add-ons that broke on a few of our sites. I would recommend waiting a bit after a major WordPress update comes out before actually installing it. This gives various programmers time to update their plug-ins to work with the latest version of WordPress and get their information into the Codex.

WordPress Plug-Ins

Below is a description of the WordPress plug-ins that I use and recommend.

SEO Title Tag – This was built by Stephan Spencer of NetConcepts. Using the post title as the title tag on the page helps with your SEO efforts. If you want something more unique as the title on that page, you can use the bulk SEO Title Tags edit screen to change the Title Tag independent of the post title.

Add-Meta-Tags - This plug-in is new to my list as we just started using it with the upgrade to version 2.2.1. The plug-in we used previously broke with the upgrade and didn’t have an update available in a timely manner, so we had to switch. It seems to work nicely and with the same features as our previous choice. The nice thing about these plug-ins is the number of options you have – if one doesn’t work, then try another.

WP Email – This is a pretty straightforward plug-in – it allows you to email a post to a friend or colleague with a cute little envelope button that appears on every post.

WP Print – This plug-in is from the same people that did the WP Email plug-in above. It works the same as the WP Email plug-in, allowing you to print a post for a later read or to share with the office.

SpamKarma– This seems more robust than Askimet for our blogs. We’ve made it our choice for controlling spam comments. By using an algorithm type method to rank the spam-karma on a comment, it eliminates the need to moderate comments. Very rarely do we see a rogue comment slip through using this tool.

Follow URL– By its design, every link within WordPress is automatically no-followed. For marketing and SEO purposes, I’m not really wild about this practice. Linking out without no-follow tags gives the link a vote of confidence from me as a blogger. I want to be able to control the links I no-follow on my blog. Using the Follow URL, you have this capability.

WP Polls – This is also from the WP Email and WP Print people. Getting your readers involved with your blog is a great way to build your reach and also encourage your audience to come back for more information. Polls are a great way to make a reader feel involved with your content and the information you spread. Use polls for things as simple as the best kind of beer - the sky is the limit.

Starting Up Your Blog

Below is a list of things to remember when starting up your blog.

  1. Use Keywords in your post titles. Don’t limit your blog posts to topics that relate to great keyword phrases. When you write your title, simply think about how you want a searcher to find that article in the search engine results. If your post is about the wide variety of widgets available, it is feasible that someone would possibly search for “widget options” to find your article.
  2. Take advantage of slugs. Post slugs allow you to insert a topic or keyword phrase into your URL. (Use www.blog.yourdomain.com/blog-setup-basics.html instead of www.blog.yourdomain.com/?p=187.) The key to ensuring this works well is to set your blog up on a Linux server – it just won’t work right on a Windows server.
  3. Enable Pinging. Pinging sends a signal to the search engines to come take a look every time new content is added to your blog. This is a great way to ensure your content is spidered quickly and should help get your posts ranking right away for less-competitive keywords.
  4. Submit to blog directories. There are a million out there – do a simple Google query for “blog directories” and start submitting. Ideally, you’ll submit to directories that feature other blogs about your topic; don’t submit to a directory that doesn’t accommodate your specific niche. Read the directions carefully – sometimes they only want your RSS feed URL as opposed to your blog URL.
  5. Blog frequently to add fresh content to your site. If you cannot commit to at least two posts a week, a blog is probably not going to be as successful for you. After posting two posts a week for a few months, you can probably back off to one post a week, but fresh content is what a blog is all about.
  6. Network your way to better traffic. I use MyBlogLog to network my blogs. From there, I can search tags for other blogs like mine and join communities with bloggers that have similar interests.
  7. Always check your blog after making a post. Be prepared for occasional blow-ups. Learning what caused the problem and figuring out how to fix it is part of the learning curve.
  8. Don’t start out building out 100 pages that you don’t have time to put good content on. Generally, pages show up in navigation, so the old adage, “keep it simple stupid,” is important. Use posts and categories to arrange your information; use pages to feature static content that doesn’t change. We use static pages for things like Road Condition links and Travel Resource information (passports and such). We built pages for each state, but the navigation is horribly out of control, so we have to go back and re-work that.

Overall, a blog is a great choice for getting the word out about your products or services. You don’t need to know Front-Page or Dreamweaver, you just load it up and go. Setting up your personal blogosphere for success in the beginning will help you reap rewards down the road.

As a small business owner and a Web site marketer, I’m always trying to find ways to get things done without having to hire someone to do it for me. I’m also very impatient, and I like instant results. Sometimes this causes conflict, so whenever I can complete a task myself, everyone stays happy.

If you’re at all like me, you might want to consider a Web site that will give you control over your content without the need to pay a designer to change a price, update a special, or swap some words around.

Clients who want to manage their own content are becoming more common as the Internet becomes less of a mystery. Every day, users gain knowledge – but many small business owners don’t have the time to devote to learning code and Web development applications. Building a Web site can be less of a mystery with a user-friendly software that allows the site owner to edit his or her own content.

Easy Web-Based Interface

I use WordPress and am amazed every day at what a little time, a little research, and a bit of patience can produce. WordPress is blogging software that can also be used as a way to build a Web site that anyone can edit. I know there are other blogging platforms out there that will do this, but my expertise lies in making WordPress work for my clients and myself.

WordPress contains a Web-based interface that makes it unnecessary to buy expensive software to make edits to your Web site. WordPress is open-source software, meaning it’s free. The best part of using WordPress is the support and resource base out there making it easy for Web design novices to learn more and find help with building a WordPress blog.

Building or maintaining your Web site or blog requires only an Internet connection – and that’s it! Even if you have a professional do the initial design work, you – the business owner – can add pages, edit pages, or change photos – your choices are limitless. Pages on your conventional site can be set up as WordPress pages, or you can design your whole Web site with WordPress.

Blog and Web Site Examples

WordPress can be as complex as you need it to be or as simple as you want it to be. Getting started with a complete site build will probably take the expertise of a professional. If you do hire a designer, make sure the scope of work includes the features that will allow you to directly edit certain sections or pages of the site – or all of them – depending upon your comfort level.

Because WordPress is widely used, there are numerous resources out there for novices to learn more and find help with building a WordPress blog. Visit this site for an example of a Web site built entirely on the WordPress platform. For another example, Ogunquit, Maine, uses a blog to manage its area attraction reviews, events, and other guest-friendly information.

Setting Up Your Blog Site

Setting up your own blog Web site is pretty simple if you have some basic Internet knowledge of FTP uploading and aren’t afraid to search for information. Basic blog-building is not that hard – but building features into WordPress that are non-standard is where you might need the help of a professional. Or, if you want something simple, a blog can be the easy way to gain a voice on the Internet where you may not have had one before.

Marketing your blog can be accomplished just as you would a conventional Web site. With the blogging software, comes the ability to “ping” the search engines to show them you have added new content. This invites the search engines back to see what you have to say – theoretically increasing the crawl rate. Continue to add good, relevant, useful content, and you should be ranking in no time for basic low-competition keywords. Competitive terms take more effort.

Features and Upgrades

Adding features and upgrades to your software is quite simple; it takes a small amount of FTP knowledge and a little time. Talented programmers from all over the globe have built plug-ins for WordPress. The plug-ins enhance the platform by allowing you to easily add features to your blog without special expertise. Plug-ins for polls, calendars, tagging, “send to a friend,” and “print this,” are popular additions to many WordPress blogs. Optimizing your pages and posts with unique page titles, meta tags, and page names is easy and manageable using plug-ins, as well.

Video sharing and photo sharing are easy with a blog. Some plug-ins allow you to put a photo feed from Flickr on your Web site. You even have the ability to embed a wide variety of videos from YouTube or IFilm, right into a post – giving your Web site a multimedia look at a fraction of the cost.

Don’t be deterred; I taught myself WordPress, and I have little to no technical design background. I didn’t even know how to FTP when I started, and now I feel confident doing a wide variety of Web site maintenance tasks. If you’re looking to design a WordPress blog for your own use, stay tuned for Part 2 of this article coming up in two weeks. I’ll be sharing some handy tips for setting up your blog Web site for success.
